Summary
Rolling Loud, the largest hip-hop festival in the world, challenged us to reimagine their headlining artists as superheroes. The goal was to create an immersive, multi-faceted campaign that connected with the global hip-hop community while building anticipation for the multi-city annual festival. This required combining visual storytelling, experiential marketing, and brand strategy to blur the lines between music, art, artist and fan engagement.
Task
Lead the creative development of a groundbreaking campaign across multiple media formats, bringing the “Superheroes of Hip-Hop” concept to life. This involved designing a four-part animated mini-series, comic books, a graphic novel, custom on-site activations, and city-branded merchandise to enhance the fan and performing artists experience and reinforce the festival’s cultural significance.
Action
Crafted a compelling superhero narrative:
• Developed a four-part animated mini-series featuring headlining artists like Post Malone, Migos, Future, and A$AP Rocky, each set in one of the festival’s four host cities.
• Extended the four-part comic series into a graphic novel, expanding the festival’s story beyond the event itself.
Designed immersive on-site activations:
• Created fully custom cereal boxes with city-specific logos, lineups as “Nutrition Facts,” interactive puzzles with trivia on the performing artists, and vibrant comic-inspired illustrations.
• Transformed the cereal boxes into a physical Cereal Bar Experience, which became a fan-favorite attraction at the festival.
Developed exclusive branded merchandise:
• Designed city-branded VIP lanyards, passes, stickers, and exclusive merchandise inspired by the festival’s superhero theme.
• Conceptualized a Willy Wonka-inspired Golden Ticket Contest, driving fan engagement and excitement.
Integrated visual storytelling across platforms:
• Combined animation, graphic design, and interactive experiences to create a seamless narrative that engaged fans both digitally and in-person.
Result
Enhanced fan and artist engagement: The superhero-themed campaign resonated deeply with the global hip-hop community and performing artists, building excitement and anticipation for the festival.
Extended brand reach: The graphic novel and animated mini-series expanded Rolling Loud’s presence beyond the event itself, creating a lasting cultural narrative.
